libro "Le porte della percezione" di
Aldous
Huxley: "La maggior parte
delle alterazioni dello stato di coscienza non possono essere raggiunte che per
prescrizione medica, oppure illegalmente con un considerevole rischio".

Jim ne era divertito, tanto da aumentare quantità e varietà di
stupefacenti: faceva qualsiasi cosa per farsi saltare il cervello, per aprire le
porte della percezione. "break on through to the other side" ...
"take the highway to the end of the night" ... "visit weird scenes inside the gold mine"
... "ride the snake", tutte frasi ad effetto che più tardi si
appuntò sui block notes dove scriveva durante quel caldo autunno 1966 trascorso
sulla spiaggia. E' in questa fase che scoprì il gusto dello scrivere con
termini che rendevano immagini, decisamente cinematografici, da visionario.
Ingoiava acidi come noccioline, fumava erba messicana; tutto per irrompere
dall'altra parte, per attraversare le porte della percezione... "Break on through to the other side"...
Nella prima settimana del Gennaio 1967 l'album "The Doors" ed il
singolo "Break On Through" erano già incisi. La locandina pubblicitaria
del disco riportava i volti dei Doors e la scritta "THE DOORS: Break On Through
con un album elettrizzante". Divenne subito il pezzo più conosciuto
sul Sunset Strip dopo essere stato eseguito al Fillmore Auditorium di Bill
Graham che li pagò soli 350$ per la serata.
