| | "The End" è una delle canzoni più memorabili dei Doors, forse perchè
insieme a "When the Music's Over" affronta per la prima volta il
concetto di "rock teatrale". Nata come un semplice motivetto di due
soli versi, la canzone si è progressivamente evoluta, secondo le
improvvisazioni di Jim, fino ad arrivare a dodici minuti.
L'evoluzione della canzone ebbe inizio una sera sul palco del "Whiskey a Go Go"
mentre Jim guardava le ballerine in gabbie di vetro. Quella sera sterssa i
"Byrds" suonavano al "Ciro's" ed i "Love" al
"Bido Lito's" e si misero in luce tanto da essere scritturati per fare
da gruppi di supporto ai concerti di Frank Zappa.

Ma Jim aveva altri progetti. Quella sera scandiva bene le proprie parole,
sceglieva con accuratezza i versi e le varianti di "The End". La sala
ascoltava in silenzio la musica ipnotica dei Doors. Persino le cameriere si
fermarono a guardare.
Jim aperse gli occhi. Iniziò a recitare la canzone aggiungendo i 12 versi
che da lì in poi avrebbero caratterizzato la canzone: stava per nascere la
mitologia pop.
Jim gridò con forza...

"Mother. . . I want to FFFUUUUCKKK Y00000!"
Nessuno tra John, Robby e Ray aveva mai sento quei versi prima di allora ed
improvvisarono il sottofondo musicale.
Phil Tanzini, responsabile del "Whiskey a Go Go", si infuriò
giurando che i Doors non avrebbero più messo piede nel locale. «Ehi tu -
gridò a Jim - sei un pazzo figlio di puttana, ti si bruciato. Tutti voi! Non
azzardatevi a tornare!».
La parte edipica della canzone aveva lasciato tutti decisamente perplessi.
L'ispirazione venne a Jim leggendo "La
nascita della tragedia" di Nietzsche
dove Edipo, assassino di suo padre, e marito di sua madre, risolve l'enigma
della Sfinge.

Fu quella sera che Paul Rothchild, produttore della Elektra, comunicò alla
band che erano pronti per spiccare il volo.
Questa straordinaria canzone venne utilizzata da Francis
Ford Coppola quale colonna sonora portante del suo film di
denuncia "Apocalypse
Now". Ciò anche in considerazione che anche i Doors erano
sensibili e coinvolti nella protesta contro la guerra in Vietnam, come
testimonia la canzone "I
Can't See Your Face in My Mind".
